The VAT return is a periodic compilation where taxpayers must report all transactions that are relevant for VAT purposes during the reporting period. Even if no taxable transactions take place, a nil VAT return must be submitted. In Latvia, the Control Statement (ledger return) must be submitted as an attachment to the VAT return, forming part of the overall VAT reporting package.
Deadlines and Frecuency
The deadline for submitting VAT returns in Latvia is by the 20th day of the following month. The reporting period may be monthly or quarterly, depending on the amount of your taxable supplies. Additionally, an annual VAT return may be due in certain circumstances.
If your Latvian VAT return results in a payable position, the VAT due must be paid by the 23rd day of the month following the reporting period. VAT payments are made via bank transfer, and it is essential to include the company's VAT number as the payment reference to ensure proper allocation by the tax authorities. Marosa will provide you with updated payment instructions every reporting period you need to make a VAT payment.
If your VAT return shows a credit position, VAT refunds are automatically processed within 30 days from the date of submission. This automatic refund process applies unless the tax authorities initiate a tax audit or request additional documentation. Your Marosa team will provide you with the necessary information and guide you through the required steps.
