Yes. If you allow Amazon to store goods in a country where you are not established, this creates a VAT registration obligation in that country.
Under EU VAT rules, storing goods in another member state qualifies as a taxable transaction, even if you are not making direct sales there. This means you must obtain a local VAT number as soon as goods are stored in that country.
Example: Moving goods from Italy to Poland
If your company is established in Italy and you allow Amazon to move stock to Poland:
- You must declare an intra-community supply in Italy.
- You must declare an intra-community acquisition in Poland.
For this reason, you need a Polish VAT number. However, if you do not yet have a Polish VAT number, you cannot fulfill your reporting obligations for these movements.
How to check your Amazon storage settings?
To review or change the countries where Amazon is allowed to store your inventory:
- Go to Settings (gear icon) > Fulfilment by Amazon
- Locate the section “Enable inventory storage”
- Click “Edit”, and remove Poland or any other unintended countries from the list.
Following the previous example, if you activated Poland or any other country as a storage location by mistake (via your Amazon settings), and don’t plan to sell there, you should immediately deactivate storage permissions for Poland. Failing to do so can risk your Amazon seller account being blocked due to unreported VAT obligations. Otherwise, Marosa can assist with obtaining a VAT registration in the countries where you intend to trade.
