In most cases, Amazon sellers apply a standard VAT rate to both products and shipping costs. However, when different VAT rates apply—such as a reduced rate for the product and a standard rate for shipping—you need to analyze additional columns in the Amazon VAT Transactions Report to obtain an accurate VAT breakdown.
Standard Setup: Same VAT Rate for Product and Shipping
If your products and shipping are taxed at the same VAT rate, we calculate net and VAT amounts using the following columns:
- Column AD: TOTAL_ACTIVITY_VALUE_AMT_VAT_EXCL – Total net value (products + shipping)
- Column AQ: TOTAL_ACTIVITY_VALUE_VAT_AMT – Total VAT amount (products + shipping)
These columns are sufficient for sellers whose entire sale (goods + shipping) is taxed uniformly.
When Different VAT Rates Apply
If you sell products with a reduced VAT rate and charge shipping separately—and the shipping is taxed at a standard rate—a more detailed breakdown is necessary. This is because Amazon allows sellers to configure VAT rates for shipping independently from product VAT rates.
In these cases, you should refer to the following breakdown columns:
➤ Net Values
- Column W: TOTAL_PRICE_OF_ITEMS_AMT_VAT_EXCL – Net amount of the items only
- Column Z: TOTAL_SHIP_CHARGE_AMT_VAT_EXCL – Net amount of the shipping charges
AD = W + Z
➤ VAT Amounts
- Column AH: TOTAL_PRICE_OF_ITEMS_VAT_AMT – VAT charged on the products
- Column AL: TOTAL_SHIP_CHARGE_VAT_AMT – VAT charged on the shipping
AQ = AH + AL
By examining these columns separately, we ensure that each part of the transaction—products vs. shipping—is assigned the correct VAT rate, which is crucial for accurate return preparation and compliance.
